Should I Purchase?

If you are looking to spend the lowest amount possible on a dash cam, the 70mai for just over $30 is a reasonable choice. Other dash cameras at this price or lower will likely be inferior from a video quality and build quality perspective. Reliability appears to be good for such a low priced camera. The small size, discreet form factor and Wifi capability are all positives as well

That being said, there are a number of drawbacks to consider. The camera has no GPS, limited manufacturer support, uses a battery instead of a super capacitor and has no parking mode. For many people, investing a little bit more in the Blueskysea B1W is a better choice given the greater support, super capacitor and parking mode. Overall the 70mai is a good value given the rock bottom price as long as you are ok with the drawbacks.

Vantrue N2 Pro

The N2 pro comes with 1.5 inch TFT LCD screen, combined with image enhancing optimizers. Also, Vantrue offers a recording angle of 170° front cam and enhanced 6 layer glass with F/1.8 wide aperture gives clear-cut details to a great extent.

Here, equipping a 32GB SD card will fulfill most of your needs. Also, the loop recording enables that additional space gets created by overwriting. The front cam captures footages in HD 1080p with a wider viewing angle of 170 degrees. The secondary cam is a cabin recorder that encompasses a viewing angle of 140 degrees.

Known problems

Out of Focus

Numerous owners have indicated that the Yi Dash Cam loses focus when the camera heats up (i.e. sitting in the sun for approx 1 hour).  This could be due to a poor quality lens / lens holder but we are not sure how widespread the problem is.  You can read more about it on our forum here.  Note that out of focus problems were somewhat common on the  Yi Action Camera as well.

Converting Chinese to English

If you install the English firmware on a Chinese camera, you may get the “System language adaptation fail Access denied” error.

Our member scoup figured out how to convert a Chinese language camera to an English language camera.  The instructions are as follows:

1. Get a Desktop/Laptop, SD Card Reader, microSD Card and a minimum 1amp microUSB charger ready
2. Copy the serial number from the menu/label on the bottom of the camera. Take only the first 14 characters
3. Write the serial number into a word processor and change the letters “CN” into “US”
4. Save as “SN.txt”
5. Create a blank file and name it “engmode”, no file extension
6. Copy both files onto your SD card
7. Insert the SD card back into the camera and power it on using your USB charger
8. Once you see the engineering menu, scroll down until you see number 8 – Exit. Select this option
9. Go into the regular settings menu and select factory reset
10. Once it reboots, exit ENG mode again and enter the settings menu and check if your serial number shows “US”
11. If good, power off your card and insert it back into your reader. Format it
12. Download the “FWCARC10.bin” file from XiaoYi’s page: http://www.yitechnology.com/firmware_en.php
13. Unzip this file into your SD card and add the .bin extension to the end
14. Insert this card back into your card and power it on again using the power cable
15. Your camera should start updating your camera, once finished, accept all prompts.
16. Format your card and you are finished

Cycliq Fly12 CE

Front-facing camera and light that doubles as a dash cam

The Fly12 CE from Cycliq isn’t a dash cam for you car, but for cyclists. Packing a 600 Lumen front bike light, the Fly12 CE can record in Full HD footage at up to 60fps in either 5-, 10- or 15-minute segments, while the 6-axis image stabilization system delivers smooth footage. 

One very neat feature is the Incident mode. If the Fly12 CE tilts over 60 degrees – falling off your bike in most instances – it will automatically lock and store the footage immediately before and after.

Thanks to ANT+ connectivity, you can connect it to your Garmin cycling computer to control the Fly12 CE on the go. There’s also a handy app as well that provides greater control over the camera/light. 

Waterproof down to 1m, it should stand up to some wet rides, while the battery life is good for 8 hours (4-5 hours if you’re going to be using the light as well). 

Where Can I Buy a Dashboard Camera?

When looking for a dash cam, there are numerous sources you can purchase from.

Local Vendors

In some cities, you might be lucky to find a “bricks and mortar” dash cam vendor.  These are rare but more retailers are carrying dash cams now.  Unfortunately many local vendors sell low quality dash cams.  There are some local vendors selling higher quality cams now.  The advantage of buying from a local vendor is warranty support if something goes wrong.  The main disadvantage is pricing.  In many cases, the price is significantly higher than the online price (double or even more).

Amazon

Amazon carries a wide range of cameras and has an excellent return policy.  While prices are slightly higher than direct from China vendors, Amazon has faster shipping and greater peace of mind.  However make sure you do your research before purchasing a cam on Amazon since there have been reports of unscrupulous sellers buying reviews.

eBay

You can usually find many of the Chinese cameras here.  Also the Korean and Taiwan gray market cameras are sold here as well, often for much cheaper than from authorized channels.  eBay and Paypal buyer protection is very good and many of the big dash cam sellers take their reputation seriously.

Aliexpress

Aliexpress, which is owned by Alibaba, sells a lot of dash cams as well.  This is like a Chinese eBay.  Unfortunately there are many unscrupulous sellers on Aliexpress.  They do not accept Paypal and the buyer protection is limited at best.  However there are some reputable vendors here.  A good rule of thumb when dealing with Aliexpress is to purchase from vendors with 1000+ feedback.

If the feedback is:99-100% – good seller98% – good seller, but if there is something wrong with it, they will not take it back willingly97% – good seller, but if there is something wrong, you are out of luck96% – a bit of a lottery, cross your fingers that your item will work, if not, you are out of luck95% – a bigger lottery, buy only if the item you are interested in has a lot of reviews with positive feedback94% or lower – never buy from these sellers

A tip for Aliexpress is to search for the dash cam you are looking for and sort by number of orders. You want to be buying a cam that many others have already purchased and have left good feedback.

DX.com

DX.com (formerly DealExtreme) has a large selection of Chinese dash cams as well.  Unfortunately the descriptions are often vague and do not include key information such as firmware version or processor.  It is difficult to determine the fakes from originals.  Check feedback carefully before purchasing.

Online Dealers

There are many online dealers, particularly from China and Korea, that sell dash cams.  When purchasing directly, you have limited buyer protection unlike Amazon, eBay, Aliexpress or DX.com.  Research carefully before purchasing since if something goes wrong you may not get any support.  These dealers typically have the lowest price so they are attractive if you are on a tight budget.

KDLINKS R100 Dual Dash Cam

The KDLINKS R100 is one of the best dash cams for surveillance in parking mode. With  140 degrees wide-angle coverage, combined with the superior night mode recording, you never really miss any details on the roads. This dashcam surveillance comes packed with a dual-lens, can work well in Single Front Cam mode or Front + Rear Dual Cam Mode. This parking mode dash cam comes with an anti-glare rearview mirror that acts as your screen to display the recorded footage.

A unique feature worth mentioning is its auto-off mechanism. If the R100 does not detect car movement within a 5 minutes interval, it will shut itself off automatically. This feature is useful for some cars that always supply power to the cigarette lighter port.

The key feature is the new parking mode footage recording that lets you record even when the car is parked. This parking mode dash cam comes with the advanced parking mode combined with movement detection. Hence the R100 starts itself and record short duration footage. Firmware Update Instructions

1. Download the firmware file, unzip it and then rename it to firmware.bin
2. Power off the Yi Sports Camera
3. Copy the file to the top level folder / root of a microSD card and then place that into your Yi Sports Camera
4. Connect the Yi camera to a power source that is turned on (very important – if the camera dies during this process you have got a dead Yi!!)
5. Turn on the Yi
6. You will now hear a constant beeping for around a minute – after this the red light will flash and the camera will turn off.
7. Remove the microSD card and place back into a PC and ensure that you delete the \firmware.bin file
8. Place the camera back in your card and start to enjoy camera

Each hardware version has a DIFFERENT firmware. You can tell the hardware revision of your camera based on the first 3-4 digits of the serial number. For example the serial number should look something like this:

Custom Firmware

One of our members, reverend, has created a custom firmware based on v1.0 and on v1.07.  This firmware increases the bitrate from 12Mbps to 18Mbps.

As with any custom firmware there is a high risk that this can brick your camera if the process is not followed correctly – always ensure you are connected to an active USB power source when you attempt to follow this process.  Currently we have not seen any ELF firmwares available and there is no known easy way to recover using something like DirectUSB.

Android / iOS App

Since the Yi Action Camera has no screen, the smart phone app is the key mechanism to manage settings and videos.  Currently an English Android app exists for the Yi Action Camera and can be downloaded here.

A Chinese iOS app was released in April 2015.

There are a few other iOS apps that work with the Yi Action Camera.  The WeTrip lite iOS app is one app.  Use the following settings:

• Set your wifi to the Cam IP -> like: 192.168.42.1 -> you can find it with Net View or other programs
• Password is 123…890 at default

Alternatively you can use the LinkinEyes app as our member reverend has discovered here.  Turn on your Yi camera and connect to the Wifi connection named YDXJ_******* (the stars will be random numbers).  The default password is:  1234567890

Launch the LinkinEyes app on your iPhone / iPad and it should now connect to your camera and let you view live video and change settings.

Это может повлиять на ее способность к хранению видео и изображений. В этом случае немедленно замените ее на новую. Используйте надежную, высококачественную карту памяти от проверенного производителя. Скорость записи на некачественные карты памяти может не соответствовать заявленному рейтингу, а их емкость может быть ниже указанной. Чтобы скорости чтения и записи не снизились после продолжительного использования, рекомендуем форматировать карту памяти в видеорегистраторе каждые две недели

Обратите внимание, что при форматировании с карты памяти удаляются все файлы. Следовательно, перед началом этого процесса необходимо сохранить все важные видео и фото. 

Не вставляйте карту памяти при включенной камере.

2. Инструкции по хранению видео

Обычные видео, видео происшествий и видео наблюдения за припаркованным авто записываются в циклическом режиме. Это означает, что когда место для хранения видео того или иного типа исчерпано, при записи нового видео этого типа самое старое видео автоматически удаляется и заменяется на новое. Чтобы важные видео не были стерты, сразу экспортируйте их на телефон, компьютер или другое устройство.

3. Инструкции по хранению фото

Видеорегистратор Xiaomi Mi Dash Cam 1S  позволяет хранить до 300 фото. Когда выделенное место будет заполнено, потребуется вручную удалить ненужные фото. В противном случае делать новые снимки будет невозможно.

Should I Purchase?

While the Yi Action Camera proved to be very popular since it was an excellent bang for the buck, we don’t think the Yi Dash Camera will achieve the same success.  The video quality is good for the price especially the night quality.  However the rectangular form factor and silver or gold color is not discreet.  Also given the Novatek processor, we don’t believe this camera will have the same grassroots hacking effort which proved to be quite popular with the action camera.  Some early reports of focus problems are a concern and the wobbly mount is a disappointment.

Overall, this camera will likely sell well in China and to Yi fans.  If you don’t care about how discreet your dash cam is, take a look at this camera given the good video quality.  If the form factor matters to you,  look for a smaller camera or wedge shaped camera.  See what other owners of this camera have to say on our Yi Dash Cam forum.

Our member funnel,  has figured out a way to hack the resolution of the Yi action camera using scripts.   These scripts allow you to change resolution and bit rate by copying a simple file to your SD card.

1. Download script file for your firmware version from Github
2. Unzip the file
3. Rename the .ash file to autoexec.ash
4. Copy the autoexec.ash file to the root of the SD card
5. Turn on your camera

This should work for all hardware revisions.  The following video from our member Alcurtis93 shows the procedure as well and there is a lot of information in this thread in our forum.
